As soon as we got there, even though it was a very a hot day, people quickly approached to say hello and kids ran to hug the team members they know, making us all feel very welcome.
As the adults had their psychological sessions and the team checked on their needs, children we’re outside learning and having so much fun while doing it by drawing, coloring, playing with sand, and listening to their teacher.

At the end, it was wonderful to see that despite the difficulties they have had in their lives, these people do not lose their humility and hope by being so kind and grateful that it is inevitable not to smile back at them.

English Version:

Angélica Hernández Ortega and Víctor Hugo Martínez Flores have a daughter named Anahi who is 1 year 4 months old. Víctor works in the amaranth fields and Angelica makes “doraditas” and chocolates to sell in order to bring some extra money to her family.

This little family has lived in borrowed houses because Victor’s family did not want to support them in their home. The day of the earthquake they were in the house of Angelica’s grandmother and the house collapsed. Her grandmother hurt her arm and her grandfather hurt his head. The family returned to the house where they lived and they realized that the house had been completely damaged and only one room was barely standing and the roof was about to fall down.

Civil Protection helped them taking out their few belongings and moved them to Angelica’s parents’ house. Those days were very difficult, they did not eat a day and a half and Angelica was pregnant; the paramedics checked her constantly because she was feeling sick, for days they did not shower because there was a shortage of water. Finally they got a tent and they moved there. They continue living in it since they do not own a land where they can build a house.

A short time ago they got the sad news that Anahí has a cyst in her chest and needs ultrasounds and medications; however, Angelica and Victor have faith that everything will be fine, they are very excited because they will soon have a home for the first time where little Anahí will grow up and now they’ll be able to concentrate on meeting the medical needs of their daughter.

English Version:

María Edith and Francisco have 4 children: Diana of 10 years, Frida of 5 years, Francisco Gael of 3 years and Axel of 2 years.

Edith became pregnant when she lived with her parents and a few years she was the single mother of Diana and Frida, the girls’ father went to Mexico City to work and sent them very little money for the girls. After a couple of years, they lived together at Francisco’s parents’ house until Axel was born; both parents have had to work in the field because one salary is not enough to cover all the expenses of the four children.

The day of the earthquake, Francisco was working and Edith was with her children in the house; the fence on the left side fell and the house began to open from the floor to ceiling. When Francisco arrived, fortunately everyone was fine, but the house was badly damaged.

Edith and Francisco no longer had a place to live in because there were three families living in the same house, as they are a very large family and they could not all live in the same house of their relatives, they decided that the family would be divided into two houses of relatives who took them in. This new scenery made the children very sad and little Gael got deeply depressed. The children want to see their parents together but because they do not have a land where to build a home they are still separated till this day.

They are extremely happy with the news they will get a new home. We feel so blessed to be part of their happiness because they will not only have a house but they will all live under the same roof again. A family will be united again!

She is a single mom, due to domestic violence she decided to separate from the father of her children and return to her parents’ house.

The day of the earthquake, Fabiola was in her room which is located in the same yard as the room of her grandmother, her daughters were with her grandmother, a part of the wall fell down and the girls were trapped, the door of the room broke and that’s how they were able to rescue them. They suffered minor injuries in their hands and head. Her parents’ house which is also locate in the same yard, got also very damaged by the earthquake and it was going to get demolished because it’s dangerous to live there but they haven’t been able to fix it, that’s were they all live now.

Fabiola, Melissa and Dulce Maria eagerly wished for a house where they could live happy and not be afraid of the house falling down on them. When they got the news that they will have their new home, the girls hugged their mom and said: “Mommy, finally our wish will come true, we will have our little house were we will be safe!”

Clara Rojas Vázquez is a single mother of 4 children; Ana María of 13, Luisa of 11, Daniel of 5 and the youngest José of only 7 months.

Clara separated from her husband a couple of years ago and since then she has not received any support from him. She had to move-in with her brothers, who a few months ago took away her support leading her to find another place to live. It was then that she was lent a house to live in at the center of Tecuanipa, which fell down during the earthquake. Clara and her children had to build a cardboard house with what she could find to live in the same land that had been lent, but she does not have water, electricity, nor a bathroom.

Every time it rains the water enters and their few belongings get wet as well as themselves; the younger children gets sick constantly from the exposure to the cold and the rain. Since 2 years ago her oldest daughter decided to leave school to help her mother. When Clara has money to invest in products, she buys amaranth cakes and chocolate to sell in Tochimilco or Atlixco and it is Ana María who takes care of her brothers; or her comadres whom she also supports by taking care of their children whenever she can.

Her daughter Luisa recently returned to live with her dad, although she goes to Clara’s house every day to drop off her little brother Daniel afterschool; she is in 5th grade of primary school and Daniel is in 3rd of kindergarten.

Clara’s family will be one of the families who will be supported by Los Angeles in Mexico, relocating them on a land and building them their own house, we feel blessed to be able to help this beautiful family. They’re happy that finally they will have a home, with a roof to keep them protected and warm during the low temperatures very common in the area.

English Version:

Diego works in the field as a laborer, he chops wood, and runs other errands. Liz is a housewife, due to having small children. Diego is 20 years old and Liz is 16 years old, they have two children, Joselyn is one and a half year old and the baby Saúl is 5 months old.

During the 2017 earthquake, the young couple was in Atlixco, Diego was working loading goods in a store and Liz was visiting her mother. When they returned to Tecuanipa, they found the adobe little house they borrowed from Diego’s father had completely collapsed. Currently they live in the same land where they put sheets of cardboard to make a house.

Unfortunately, the young people do not have the support of their parents, since Diego’s father is taking care of daughter who has cancer and also providing her aid. Liz’s mother is a single mom who doesn’t have a land to give them or how to provide financial help.

Since they are together, they have gone from house to house, asking for a borrowed place to live, then with the earthquake, they were left homeless and improvised with the materials they found but they suffer the inclemency of the weather every day.

They are very happy and grateful with the news that they will be benefited with a house, where they will see their kids grow and have a beautiful home for their family to live in for the first time.

Humberto and Angelica, 24 and 22 years old respectively have two girls, Andrea 6 years old and Janneli Guadalupe a year and a half. Angelica sells snacks such as pumpkin seeds, fried foods, different sort of nuts and “alegrías” (amaranth candy typical of the region), she travels by bus to sell her snacks from Friday to Monday. Humberto works as a laborer in the countryside, splitting firewood and doing errands. During the weekend Angelica travels to work and Humberto stays to take care of the girls.

The young parents are together since 2012. They moved from Tecuanipa to Mexico City but when they did not find any opportunities in the capital, they returned at the birth of their first daughter, Andrea. Just a few months after Janneli’s birth in 2017, the earthquake that would destroy her home occurred.

On the day of the earthquake, the two traveled to Cuautla to work and when they heard about the earthquake, they returned to Tecuanipa and found the adobe house where they were living in completely collapsed. Their daughters were with the grandparents and fortunately they were safe, they say it was a miracle because if they had been in the house it would have been a tragedy. After the earthquake someone let them stay in a house for 8 months but were later asked to moveout , currently they’re living in a tent in the hill.

One of the many reasons why Humberto and Angelica’s family are so close to our hearts and for which they were chosen to obtain housing support is because of their little daughter Janneli. At birth, the doctors told them in the first instance that he had Down Syndrome, in addition to having muscular dystrophy, she does not move her hands and has a malformation of the heel. The doctors told him he would need many studies, tests and medications; she had to be treated in Puebla because in Atlixco (the closest city to Tecuanipa) they did not have the devices to treat her, besides she required to see different specialists, such as: neurologist, pediatrician, orthopedist, and specialists in genetics and stomatology. They could only afford the expenses for 3 months. They say they have a hard time getting the money to pay for the bus ticket to Puebla and they would have to decide between taking her to the doctor and eating.

They already felt that with the diagnosis of their little daughter they were going through the worst moments of their lives and with the earthquake they were losing hope. Now with the news that they will be supported with a new house, they say that this will change their lives completely as they have moved from house to house, being evicted, they say that wherever the house is built, they will move in there with pleasure and make it their home. They are very happy and more optimistic looking at a more hopeful future.

She does not have a home or a piece of land, the little adobe room where they live is borrowed, this place was also affected by the Earthquake, it is very damaged and it is extremely dangerous to live in there but have no other option.

For half a year the landlord began to charge a rent of $ 500.00 MXN and despite paying him, the owner wants to evict them.

Lucrecia and her children received with great pleasure the news that they will finally have a place to call home, to live without fear of a wall collapsing or the fear of being thrown out of their place. The Morales González family is infinitely grateful for having being considered and provided the support they have waited for so long, now they can see the future with more hope and motivation to move forward in life.

English Version:

Timoteo and Ana Flor have three children, Cristian, 7 years old, Ana Itzel, 5 years old, and little Jessica, 3 years old. Timoteo only has a job during the amaranth harvest months, which are November, December and January. Ana Flor is dedicated to taking care of her children and in the afternoon she sells, snacks, candies and drinks outside the Afternoon High School to help support her family.

When Ana Flor and Timoteo met, they decided to try their luck in Mexico City; as Timoteo couldn’t get a job, they returned to Tecuanipa, with nowhere to stay and without the possibility of staying with any of Timoteo’s brothers; they moved to La Colonia (which is a hill in Tecuanipa) where they lent a house and lived there for 3 years until shortly after the earthquake.

During the earthquake, the house was very affected so they were asked to move out in order to fix it. Once again they found themselves without a home to live in, and with scarce resources they don’t have the possibility of acquiring a small piece of land much less to build a house. The parents of Ana Flor, allowed them to put a tent on the roof of their house since the family is very large and the house is small that is the only place they could provide them. They’ve lived there since October 2017, the children play in a small area next to the tent but at great risk, since the house of Ana’s parents was also damaged due to the earthquake, the structure is not stable, the roof moves and when it trembles again it’s very dangerous since it puts both families at risk.

They are extremely excited and grateful that they will have their own house for the first time, where their children will grow up, a home where the kids will no longer be cold sleeping in a tent or live in the constant danger of living on a rooftop.
