Gaby’s Visit

English Version

The third visit to San Miguel Tecuanipa was by Gaby Carranza on behalf of Fundación VeracruzANA, representing Los Ángeles en México to put in motion the construction of the home for the family of Anita.

On January 22 we arrived early morning to Tecuanipa; Gaby; Scarlett and Zury from TVUDLAP; Gabriel, Carla, and Óscar from the construction team; and Raúl from Universidad de las Américas Puebla. The first thing we did was visit the home of Don Tobías, the workers were there; within 20 days the walls had been brought up, now they were installing the electric and hydraulic systems. Óscar explained to us the technical aspects. Don Tobías having been very attentive through the process also comments on the works he has seen.

Don Tobías proceeds to walk us over to his neighbors home; he wanted us to be there when she filled out the eligibility application for her home re-construction. She has received aid from the government for the complete destruction of her home but the dimensions proposed do not accommodate for the number of people in her household. We were welcomed with a tupper full of freshly toasted pumpkin seeds. We talk to the family and assure them that we will take into consideration their specific case, however we inform them that the aid they received from the government, ONE has a priority to provide aid for the families that have completely lost their homes who did not receive any form of aid and have children who are minors as household members.

When saying our farewell to Tobías, he embraced us in a big hug, gave us blessings; and we could see the excitement he has to see his home almost completed.

After, we went to visit Don Victor’s home, there we could see that the terrain had already been traced to begin with the placement of the first stone in the construction, placed by Víctor himself and his granddaughter Ana Gabriela. In addition, we are invited to stay and eat with their family; a delicious broth, handmade tortillas, and pumpkin seeds. The meal was to celebrate the beginning of the construction for their home. While we eat, Víctor shares with us more about the cultivation of amaranth; this is the only source of income the family has, the income gained from the harvest of amaranth must last them the entire year, along with their other smaller harvests of tomatoes and beans.

In this occasion, we leave with bags full of black beans and ayacote beans kindly given to us, a tradition of this region.
