THE SHELTER FOR IMMIGRANTS where hundreds of people come for a dinner at 6pm and a little spot to sleep. And often times that spot to sleep is on the floor. None of these people are from Tijuana. They have traveled from far foreign countries hoping to cross the border in the search of a better life in the US. Some have been deported from the US after living there for 30 years, so they try to find little jobs during the day and come back for a warm meal and a safe place to lay their bodies at night. They shelter men and women from ages fifteen up. The immigrants’ ultimate goal is to cross the border. They will repeat this goal until they have success or in the other case die. We brought some food and clothes and try to understand their situation. The shelter has some “showers” outside, one burner that works and a roof. But here, where survival is the common denominator, all that really matters to these people is to a little square on earth to leave their belongings.

Is it good? Is it bad? It is our opinion not to judge, but to give a helping hand to a fellow citizen of the world. People aren’t going to stop crossing the border just because we offer them no aid– they’re economic refugees. We can want and expect people to take the legal, very expensive, long route to immigration, but what happens to the one who has no money and no hope and no way to feed their children? These people are risking their lives for the hope of something better.
