April 3, 2020 (Los Angeles, CA) – Led by actress and humanitarian Ana De La Reguera, ONE Children’s Foundation is launching a fundraising campaign to help support immigrant children and their families for their urgent needs during this unprecedented period in history.

“As the global pandemic continues to ravage the planet, we have an obligation to help those in our local communities who are most vulnerable and need the basics that many of us take for granted,” said De La Reguera. “I am urging those who are able, to make a financial donation to ONE Children’s Foundation today that will provide urgent supplies to shelters at the border and to local immigrant families.”

It’s been two years since the September 19th, 2017 Earthquake devastated Mexico, due to this tragedy We: Ana, Kate, Karla and Olga got together and created our program “Los Ángeles en México”, and were later joined by Esmeralda Pimentel, our program godmother.
Since day one we committed ourselves and invested our hearts and efforts in helping the community of San Miguel de Tecuanipa in Puebla. It’s been a long journey and a lot of work with just one goal in mind: to provide homes to families who lost everything.
We’ve proudly shared with you the rebuilding progress these past two years. During the first phase of our Project: we built 7 homes for 7 families who already owned their land. We (Ana, Olga, Esmeralda and Claudia Pinto Director of ONE Children’s Foundation) personally handed the keys to the new homes to each of the seven families. We’ve seen smiles, expressions of surprise, hope and tears of joy from those who have been recipients of these homes. This effort was undertaken with lots of love and we have shared it with all the people who have supported us. We are graceful to have been given opportunity to contribute and participate.
During the multiple visits to Tecuanipa, we realized that there were more families who needed a home. Families that were affected during the earthquake, whose modest homes fell apart (most of them were just little rooms made of adobe) where they were allowed to stay or where they rented for a minimum amount that their work as farmers in the amaranth fields allowed them to afford. Three of them are single-mother families who continue to live in tents on the roofs of homes of a relative or acquaintance who allowed them to settle there. The need and responsibility to help them was obvious. It broke our hearts to see that children living in dangerous conditions out in the open and exposed to illness or accidents. Therefore, we began the second phase of this project: supporting families that didn’t own a land due to insufficient income and are struggling to get back on their feet. We gave ourselves the task of gathering the resources to buy a land for 10 families that were selected through a survey that identified the families that did not own a land and needed a home.
Thanks to current and future donations, we are currently working on building these ten homes for the families of Lucrecia, Clarita, Fabiola, Angelica and Victor Hugo, Maria Edith and Francisco, Carlos and Elizabeth, Diego and Lizbeth, Angelica and Humberto, Timoteo and Ana Flor, Eva and Mauro whom will soon have a home.
Thanks to Proyecto Terra, solar panels were installed at the TeleSecundaria Emiliano Zapata school in Tecuanipa and they extended their commitment to provide support and solar panels for the 10 houses that we are currently under construction.
Regardless that it has been already two years since the earthquake our commitment to San Miguel De Tecuanipa, Puebla is still ongoing. And to continue with the rebuilding we have organized fundraising campaigns, marketing initiatives, and sales of t-shirts, sweatshirts and accessories. Additionally, we have also just launched a dinner giveaway in Los Angeles, California with our founders and godmother (Ana de la Reguera, Karla Souza, Kate del Castillo, Olga Segura and Esmeralda Pimentel), in order to raise the necessary funds to reach the goal and meet with our commitment: to build a home 10 more families.
We thank the team of Universidad de Las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) for their collaboration with Los Ángeles en México. They have been with us since the beginning of our program. This past Thursday, September 12, they travelled to Tecuanipa, to continue documenting the work that LAEM is doing. Thank you UDLAP for witnessing the continuing progress of this project.
None of this would have been possible without the contributions of donors and companies that have been excellent allies supporting this great project, including: Zelika García Founder of Zona Maco, Gabriel Orozco, VeracruzANA, Paul Pressburger President of Pantaya, Carlos Couturier, Moisés Micha of Grupo Habita and Aeromexico.
We deeply appreciate and thank all the people, companies and organizations who have supported and given us the opportunity to help the community of San Miguel Tecuanipa, Puebla. This is a job that we’ll undertake together. So, thank you again for all you have given.

Thursday, Aprilth 4th to Saturday, April 6th

Carmen, offered the moms that will be benefited through the Foundation, the opportunity to learn a skill that Carmen and her family have perfected for three generations. Carmen’s family has made delicious crystallized handmade sweets and has traveled from Puebla to the state of Veracruz promoting and selling these delicacies. This could give them the opportunity to start a small business and be able to work on it while taking care of their children, the children can also participate and the moms can sell the sweets in the community or go to other neighboring towns to offer them.

Carmen bought in a local store which belongs to Elizabeth’s family, the sugar, the sweet potatoes, the painting to decorate and stone lime. Other ingredients such as the “Chilacayote” a fruit that grows in Fabiola’s yard, which she cut it off from the plant and it was her contribution. Doña Flor brought two pumpkins, Angelica and Edith contributed with firewood, the grandmothers of the children also joined, both Fabiola’s mother and Angelica’s. Carmen taught them the process of preparing the sweet potatoes, peeling and cutting the fruit, putting it in lime and let it rest for 3 hours.

On Friday, Fabiola offered her house to continue with the classes and the mothers and the two grandmothers met there, improvised a kitchen outside where the children could play under their supervision. They continued with the preparation of the sweets. They added sugar to the sweet potatoes. These sweets are traditional from the state of Puebla. At 6 pm they went back to check on the sweets and met Fabiola’s grandmother who also helped preparing the sweets and continued with the preparation of these delicacies.

On Saturday, April 6th , they finished making the sweets. It took three days in total to make them, they were fun and productive days, Carmen was able to share her knowledge in this culinary art and the moms and grandmothers were able to learn a new activity that gives them the opportunity to acquire an extra income to help their families. Very noble gesture of Carmen and the ladies in Tecuanipa really showed a lot of disposition and desire to learn something new!

English Version

On March 28, very early in the morning, Ana de la Reguera came to Puebla accompanied by Zelika, the director of Zona Maco and Karim her son, to visit Tecuanipa. This visit gave us a lot of joy, thanks to Zelika and her donation to ONE Children’s Foundation for a space in Zona Maco, we were able to raise funds for the construction of two more houses in San Miguel Tecuanipa.

The meeting point was the hotel La Purificadora, where they met with Gaby Carranza and Claudia Pinto to go to San Miguel. Upon arriving to the house of Don Victor, we were moved once more to see that they had prepared a meal for us; a delicious mixiote with hand-made rice, beans and tortillas. The construction was not finished yet but they had advanced considerably from the previous day’s visit to now; half of the house was stucco on the outside, and all the pottery was removed. Only a few details were missing to be able to place the windows, finish with the waterproofing and paint of the house. As always we had a very good time in the company of Don Víctor’s family. Zelika saw the work done by Carolina and Adriana in napkin embroidery, she liked them so much that she bought 10 pieces.

The engineer, Óscar, explains to them the details of the construction and the time left to complete it; he hopes that in two more weeks it will be completely ready so that they can begin to inhabit it. Suddenly, Miguelito appeared with his hat and a red shirt to receive the gift that Ana brought him from Los Angeles. When we finished eating we took a picture with the whole family and said our goodbyes before we continued our journey.

We arrived at the house of Areli so that Ana, Zelika and Karim could meet the family and give them the good news that we are going to build their house. Areli could not hold the emotion and hugged her children crying when she heard that Los Angeles in Mexico will support them in the reconstruction of her house. As soon as we left, the cleaning and debris removal work started at the home to begin construction as soon as possible, but not before taking the official photo with Areli and her children.

After the visit, Ana, Zelika and Karim returned to Mexico City. Claudia and Gaby continued visiting more families; We then went to Mariana’s house because her house was affected by the earthquake, however she has minor damages. We met with her, her husband and their four children for a while, while they told us how they had experienced the quake. Them, like many other families, were not censused by the government because they live in small streets, unpaved and far from the main roads of the community.

We returned again with the family of Marco Antonio and Francisco, for our follow-up visit from the day before to finish the survey and complete the request for documents. On the way back we were approached by a girl named Eva, who was carrying in her arms the smallest of her children, David.

Eva told us that she has 6 children, the oldest of 10 years and the little David of just a few months. She asked us to visit her house that is in the entrance of the community of San Miguel Tecuanipa; the in lands that are common for the people who do not have properties. Eva is married to Mauro. When we arrived to visit her house we could see that it is damaged; one of the walls moves just by touching it, for now they supported them with a tent in which they all sleep and have some of their belongings. The house of Eva and Mauro that is still standing yet totally damaged consists only of a room with a bed where everyone sleeps. There are 8 members in the family. The children play in the space they use as a kitchen where they make alegrías with the amaranth that they buy from their neighbors. When we talked with them we learned that the land they live in belongs to their mother, and that everything is divided between Mauro and his 5 brothers; the space is not big enough for the model of house we need to build. We make the decision to relocate the family in another field.

Thus concluded this visit to San Miguel Tecuanipa.

Claudia Pinto, the director of ONE Children’s Foundation and Gaby Carranza, director of Fundación VeracruzANA, visited San Miguel Tecuanipa on March 27. This time they went alone with the idea to have a more in-depth visit with all the families that had been noted in the previous visit.

As soon as their arrival they paid a visit the family of Don Víctor to see the progress of the construction; everyone had been working diligently to finish the project soon. Gabriel and Benito, Don Victor’s sons, helped to sift the sand and the masons, also contributing to the work. In addition, the windows were being placed, while another person was stuccoing the walls of the bathroom and another one was repeating the earthenware. The engineer Óscar, from Misión La Paz supervised the work and gave us more details of the progress so far.

We went to the kitchen guided, by the smell of a delicious sauce of chicharrón with cactus that Carolina cooked, while Adriana threw the tortillas on the comal. As always, with utmost attentiveness towards us, we were invited to have lunch, an offer we could not refuse. During the meal we asked Don Víctor about the new families we would visit this time, he himself offered to accompany us to visit them and guide us to their homes. After we finished eating we set foot through the streets of Tecuanipa, but not before saying our goodbyes to the beautiful Ana Gaby, and Miguelito who was playing on the mountain of earth that his father and uncle were hanging, along with the cement mixture.

The next house we visited was Areli’s, who came out to meet us with her children José and Isabel; her husband Francisco was not there. Areli told us the situation they experienced in the earthquake; her house was a total loss, but they did not receive more than partial support, none of the walls are repaired, there is no roof, the entire area of land is full of rubble. For now they live in a tent, where they have accommodated the few belongings that were left to them, sleeping in the same space. We conducted our survey and everything matched the criteria of ONE Children’s Foundation to be selected as one of the families we will support. The survey is how we determine to build their house. We made an agreement with Areli and our engineer Óscar so that the work of cleaning the land could begin, for we had to finish demolishing the remainders of the construction in order to start to build.

For our next visit we went up to the Church to see Francisco; his house is still standing, but the walls are totally damaged, the floor quartered and plunged in many places. Francisco and his wife tell us the fear they have every time the floor trembles again; they decided to have their children and grandchildren sleep in the room that suffered the least damage while he and his wife remain in the damaged construction. Gael and Frida, two of their grandchildren are in the room with their dad watching television and eating shaved ice to escape the heat that is felt in Tecuanipa now that spring has begun. After reviewing the house with Óscar, our engineer, and carrying out the data collection of the family, we said our goodbyes. However, we agreed to return the next day to review some of the documents they had.

Marco Antonio’s family was our last visit. We had been informed by his mother-in-law about the total loss of his property. We arrived to the home, accompanied by Don Víctor and Óscar, there we were greeted by Marco Antonio’s mother for he was not home. His parents showed us the house that did not have a roof nor complete walls, for now both Marco Antonio and his children, as well as his brother and his children live with their parents in a room that has been lent to them while aid arrives. As they told us more about the loss they suffered with the earthquake, Marco Antonio’s dad started cleaning chicken prey that he had in a bucket. We also agreed to return the next day to continue with the data collection.

We returned to Puebla to La Purificadora Hotel; they treated us wonderfully and we appreciated their donation and all their attentions to be able to stay with them during our time in Puebla.

English Version

On March 8th, Esmeralda Pimental visited San Miguel de Tecuanipa; accompanied by Scarlett from TVUDLAP, Oscar our engineer from Constructora Misión La Paz, and Gaby from Fundación VeracruzANA.

Once arriving to Tecuanipa, the first stop made was to the home of the González family; there we spoke with Mr. Jaime and his sons Enrique and Jaime as they worked on the construction. Mr. Jaime mentioned that his wife Julia had to leave for Atlixco due to her new job, which she had to get following the earthquake; with the loss of her oven, Julia had to find another source of income to help support her family. They were able to watch as the sediment was being placed, Oscar, the engineer, explained how they had worked through the drawn of the land.

People from the village began to arrive to where they were, many of them had been severely affected by the damages the earthquake caused; Esmeralda spoke with many of them, listening to their requests and offering them words of encouragement that managed to alleviate their pain in the moment, understanding that their reality was complicated. Gaby spoke with them honestly about the possibility of Los Ángeles en México, and the criteria needed for families to receive support; many of them took note. After, they payed a visit to three other families, inspecting the damages of their homes.

Once the homes had been visited, accompanied by Oscar the engineer, who recognized the condition they were in, the group went to visit the Rojas family. Upon arrival they were surprised with a delicious home cooked pozole by Don Victor’s family. They began their visit with a tour of the home; the walls are once again standing with the electric and hydraulic system installed. The next steps will be to cast and repel the walls, was expected to begin the following week. The Rojas family expressed their excitement and gratitude, knowing that they will soon have a roof to sleep under; the entire family have been sleeping in a single room.

The meal was very pleasant, between the talk and laughs from little Miguel Ángel, who is only 2 years old but holds a strong attitude; he would not let anyone take his picture. That day, Miguel Ángel was wearing red boots, a shirt and sombrero, none of these things stopped him from sitting on the ground, playing with the toy cars gifted to him. Ana Gabriela is very noble, she always welcomes them with a giant smile, running to greet them with open arms; she was very happy with the doll she was gifted.

After the meal, the group went to visit Don Tobías; his house is already painted white, this was the last thing needed to be completed. They all were very excited to see his bed and and personal belongings already placed inside; however, it is still saddening seeing the rest of the house empty, for it has been impossible to recover any furniture, all of it is under the ruble. While visiting Don Tobías his nephews stopped by to say hello.

To finalize their trip, they returned one last time to Jaime and Julia’s house; the children had already returned from school. The Los Ángeles en México team was able to speak with little Roberto and Esme, who were still wearing their uniforms; along with them Esmeralda grabbed a shovel, placing a stone to symbolize the home of the González family.

Our fourth visit to San Miguel Tecuanipa was to handover the home to Don Tobías’ and his family. We left Mexico City early morning, at 6 am, very excited. We had been invited by Zelika to partake in the Zona Maco fair this year; they have been a great support to our movement.

We arrived very early to Pueblo, where we stopped for breakfast and discussed how in the visit we would be meeting the families and offer help. For the first time, Ana was travelling with Olga Segura and Esmeralda Pimentel. Esmeralda had just recently joined Los Angeles in Mexico as a godmother for our cause. Also on the visit, there was Claudia Pinto – the Director of ONE, Monste Blanco – collaborator of ONE; and Gaby of Fundacion VeracruzANA

After breakfast we went to UDLAP to meet the rest of the team: UDLA, TVUDLAPA and the contractors Misión La Paz. We all left for San Miguel Tecuanipa in two vans. We first visited the family of Don Víctor to observe the progress of the work; the rebar structures were placed and the foundations set. They were all happy to see the members from Los Angeles in Mexico; Ana is greeted as a friend of the family, little Ana Gabriela immediately runs to hug her. Olga and Esme immediately also become part of this great family, we took photos with them and we talked for a while. They show us how they have settled for the meantime, their sleeping arrangement now that their tent had been removed due to the construction. Doña Hermelinda, Víctor’s mother is there to make us laugh, she becomes very close to Olga and they make jokes between them. They invite us to have a drink while we continue talking until it’s time to say goodbye, for Eloy had also invited us to come to his house.

We arrived with Eloy. The walls of the two new rooms of his house were raised, for he had used the money he earned through his construction labor. Eloy is happy with every visit we make and offers to help us so that we can continue to support more people in San Miguel. In his house are his wife Blanca and his daughter Liz. Eloy offers us another “little refreshment” so we can continue the trek up and down the streets of Tecuanipa, when leaving his street we stop for a while to check the list of the census made by SEDESOL, and identify the new families we are going to visit. At this stop Ana, Esme and Olga take the opportunity to visit one of the houses built by another Association, called échale a tu casa, they make houses with PET.

We continued with our tour until we arrived at Tobías’ house. We were filled with emotion, and tears seeing the house finally completed, adorned and with flowers. Tobías had prepared a game for the members of Los Angeles in Mexico; to each one he gave a different set of keys, and only one opened the door. The first to try it was Olguita and she had no luck, Ana could not open it either, finally Esme shouted and jumped with the surprise to see that her key was the one that opened the door. We all walk in to see the house already finished; it was still empty because Tobías had not wanted to enter until the Los Angeles in Mexico team was there to deliver it themselves. Everything was in proper working conditions; lights, windows, water faucets, doors, everything as i Tobías and his family deserve, who starting today have a safe house to sleep in.

He and his family prepared a delicious meal; a mixiote with handmade tortillas, guacamole, rice and beans. There were toasts and many anecdotes told we also, met the rest of Carmen’s children and her husband. We finally were able to share and enjoy the company of the whole family, like them, we celebrate the first great achievement we had with Los Angeles in Mexico.

When the meal was over we continued walking through some of the streets to meet more families, but before we went up to the church, closed off due to the many cracked and fallen walls. At the top we could observe the town very well, and see the amount of people who still need support, debris can still be seen in many places, and tents, which means that there are many families that still do not receive any support. From up there with the help of Eloy and the census list we chose the next family we would visit; it was then that we arrived at Doña Julia’s house.

Upon arrival we were greeted by her brother Pablo and who told us the whole story of the family. There are 6 brothers who share the land but only Julia and him live there; he is married and has children but neither live in Tecuanipa for they are of legal age. Julia has 5 children, 3 of them are still minors, the youngest are Esmeralda and Roberto. Little Roberto lost sight in his right eye at age 3 in a domestic accident. They are currently living in a tent with all their things. Besides dedicating themselves to the field they also made bread, but the furnace they worked with was broken in the earthquake; now Julia had to get a job in Atlixco to support Jaime, her husband.

At the end of the visit with Julia, we met with her neighbor Don René, he also lost his house although on the same plot one of his older children has another house where they are all living, with René live two minors, his wife and his mother whom is in a wheelchair.

It was time to return to Mexico City before the sunset in San Miguel.

The Los Angeles team in Mexico they decided that Julia’s family would be the next we would help.
